Electoral Justice Project

Illustration, Motion Design
2020

Client: Movement for Black Lives
Team: Emily Chu, Nic Stark
Role: Illustration, Design, Storyboarding
I was very fortunate to be able to work on this animated video explaining Electoral Justice, Voting Rights, and Black History in the US that was aired during the Black National Convention Livestream on Aug 28, 2020.

Working closely with Movement for Black Lives members who were organizing the Convention, we were tasked to visualize their passion, energy, and messages of strength and empowerment. With the momentum from the Black Lives Matter Marches and upcoming election, we used historical imagery, fluid shapes, and brand colors to carry their powerful and hopeful message for the future through representations of the past and present.

Visualizing a Movement

I was tasked in creating a visual style of illustration, motion, and type using the BNC (Black National Convention) branding system. After receiving the script and narration from the client I drew up complete storyboards, animatic, style-frames for each scene, and design of final vector and photo assets to be used for the final motion piece. Not only was communication crucial as we were working remotely, we had to make sure we were communicating and visualizing the narrative truthfully and respectfully during a very volatile time in the US.

Process: Storyboards

After dividing the script into 7 scenes, storyboarding was crucial in communicating our ideas with the client. After storyboarding, I created vector assets, drawn in procreate and adobe illustrator, and composed them into style frames for final animation.

Process: Initial Proposal

Initially we created 3 small animated scenes to propose how we would design the motion, type, themes, and photography for the client to review. The first is illustrating the Ecosystem of many organizations coming together. Second was how to illustrate historical and thematic references. Third was illustrating the M4BL symbolism. All these scenes were used in the final animation.
